Rockbridge Conservation’s Annual Community Cleanup
For over three decades, Rockbridge Conservation has been spearheading the Annual Community Cleanup in Rockbridge County! We partner with local organizations and governments and hundreds of volunteers to remove trash from our county’s roads and streams.
Each year during the last two weekends of March, Rockbridge Conservation, Rockbridge County and VDOT enlist the efforts of organizations and groups, students, families, and individual volunteers to help beautify our Rockbridge home. Prior to the cleanup, we will post a page that has links to signup and lots of information on how you can participate! If you’d like to get involved in organizing the cleanup, please let us know!
Litter Cup Challenge:
In an effort to raise additional awareness about litter issues and spur some friendly competition in our community, the Annual Rockbridge Community Cleanup includes the Litter Cup Challenge! Each year, the group that collects the most bags of trash and/or large items takes possession of the Litter Cup (photo at right) until the following year’s cleanup. The Litter Cup was created by Mark Cline.

The Cleanup was started by Mollie Messimer as a way to get citizens involved in beautifying the roadways of Rockbridge. It has continued Mollie passed it on, and for close to 20 years has been run by Dave Harbor. Dave is still working with us and has brought mapping technology and additional structure to the event. This initiative highlights the coordination and collaboration between a variety of organizations. RC works with the County of Rockbridge, VDOT, and Boxerwood Education Association. The Rockbridge Regional Library branches and county recycling facilities also play critical roles.
No! Although we encourage all of our committee volunteers to become members. Committee leadership must be members of Rockbridge Conservation.
