Sunnyside Preserve and Trail

A public access property owned by Rockbridge Conservation

Description

Sunnyside Preserve

Rockbridge Conservation and Kendal at Lexington have established a partnership for management of the Sunnyside Preserve. Kendal maintains a mowed track through the grassy area and a woodland path has been designed and cleared by volunteers. Professional mapping of the wetlands is complete and plans are under way to bring native plants into riparian zones.

The Sunnyside Preserve and Trails is a 12-acre parcel of land owned by Rockbridge Conservation. The land was a gift of the Bartenstein family to the organization. Because of its proximity to Kendal and its use by residents, Kendal at Lexington staff help to maintain the Sunnyside Preserve property, including trail design, bridge repair, and clearance.

A mowed path runs through the grassy area of the Sunnyside Preserve, from the area near the road up past the Spencer Oak and to the top of the hill. There are beautiful views from the property of the surrounding mountains. The trail continues from the top of the hill back down the hill through the forested slopes that are above Woods Creek. The steeper trails may not be appropriate for all hikers.

Rules of the trail:

  • The public is welcome to use the Sunnyside Preserve property for recreational purposes
  • Rockbridge Conservation trails are open Dawn to Dusk
  • Dogs must be on leash (pick up poop)
  • No dirt bikes, UTVs, ATVs, 4-wheelers or other loud & fast motorized vehicles.

Our trail maintenance crew meets monthly to make improvements and strategize about next steps. Strategy meetings are held on the third Monday of odd months and work days are scheduled close to the third Monday of even months (around the weather). Contact Chris Wise for more information.
